MATCH PREVIEW

RB Leipzig are on a run of three-consecutive league victories at the Red Bull Arena, including a 6-0 thrashing of Nürnburg in their last home outing – their biggest-ever Bundesliga victory. After that result fans will be expectant, and a win here against Schalke would be the first time that Leipzig have registered four home league victories in a row since September/November 2017.
With the third-highest number of goal attempts in the league (127), Leipzig continue to base their strategy on attacking often and in numbers – they’ve had eight different scorers in their last four competitive games.
The hosts have also hit the woodwork six times – more than any other Bundesliga team this season. Curiously their opponents, Schalke, have hit the frame of the goal five times – the same number as league goals they have scored.
Languishing in the relegation zone, the league’s second-lowest scorers have been poor so far, however Schalke are unbeaten in their last three away games (W2, D1), albeit two were in the Champions League.
Notably, when Schalke have conceded first they’ve gone on to lose the game in all six of their league defeats this season. A lack of aggressiveness is certainly not the problem however, as the visitors have clocked up 18 yellow cards – the joint-highest in the Bundesliga and tied with Leipzig.
Players to watch: With four scored, and more goal attempts (34) than any other Bundesliga player, Timo Werner is likely to cause Schalke problems.
Lively in midweek against Galatasaray, Schalke’s Breel Embolo was denied several times and had a goal disallowed.
Stat attack: In Leipzig’s three Bundesliga home victories, they were winning at half-time.
Only one of Schalke’s last ten competitive games ended with over 2.5 goals.
There’s only been four competitive H2Hs – both teams scored in three, and the away side on the day has never won.
