Perhaps unsurprisingly, Albania suffered their heaviest defeat this UEFA European Championship qualifying (ECQ) campaign, losing 4-1 to France on Saturday. However, that game was the first of their five ECQ fixtures so far where both teams scored (W2, L3).
Without a draw in any competitive home game since the beginning of 2015 (W5, L8), a winner looks likely again here considering none of the six previous H2Hs versus Iceland ended in a stalemate. Albania won two of those meetings, both by a one-goal margin, and each of the last five H2Hs have also been decided by such a tight margin.
Iceland sit third after recording four wins from five (W4, L1), leading at half-time in all of those victories. Similar to their hosts, the visitors haven’t seen a draw in a competitive away game (neutral venues excluded) since September 2016 (W3, L5 following), and have drawn just one ECQ away game since the turn of the century.
With both teams scoring in just one of Iceland’s last seven ECQ away fixtures (W4, L3), getting the opener will be crucial. In fact, Iceland have never won an ECQ away game when conceding first, whilst on the other hand they have won nine of the 11 away games where they scored first in European qualifying (W9, D1, L1).
Players to watch: Sokol Cikalleshi has come off the bench to score in Albania’s last two ECQ fixtures.
Birkir Bjarnason netted the opener in Iceland’s last away victory – he’s been Iceland’s first goalscorer in seven of the 11 international games that he’s found the net.
Stat attack: Albania have scored four of their six ECQ goals after the 85th minute.
During Iceland’s ECQ campaign so far, there’s been an average of 3.6 yellow cards per fixture.
The opener was scored within 25 minutes in each of the last three H2Hs.
